Removing deposite on 100 yr old floor tiles?

My house has lovely 100 yr old tiles but some have a white deposit which disappears when they are wet. Maybe it is glue (they were covered with vinyl tiles). I want to remove it and just rubbing doesn't do much. Any ideas? I have tried adhesive cleaner. Help?
