Why did persecution increase during the Reformation?

Because, the Roman Catholic Church was not willing to budge an inch as regards it's flase teachings and complete aposasy from the truth. They enjoed the control they had over Europe's peasants and leaders alike. Also, the money they raked in was stupendous, and they were not going to let go without a lot of bloodshed.
